‘Elementary’ season 5 adds two more episodes

ElementaryFor those who love “Elementary,” be prepared to get a little bit more of it this season than originally planned!

According to SpoilerTV, CBS has ordered an additional two episodes of the Jonny Lee Miller – Lucy Liu crime series, which brings the overall order for the season to an impressive 24. That’s the same number of episodes that every other season has secured in the past, and this is also not the first time that episodes were added beyond the initial 22 over the course of the season.

So why make this move? For the network, we feel for the most part that it has to do with creating a certain degree of flexibility. There may be a week or two down the road where CBS could go for a two-hour event, or if nothing else, they’ll have new episodes to keep some weeks from being entirely repeats.

As for if this move was justified by the ratings for the show, we cannot say that this is the case. So far, season 5 is averaging just a 0.7 rating in the 18-49 demographic, which is down over 20% versus the fourth season. Granted, that season had a slightly-better timeslot, but even still these are not winning ratings by any means. Then again, just remember that the show getting extra episodes doesn’t necessarily mean that it is going to be renewed or canceled. The one thing that always works in the show’s favor is that it is owned by CBS, which means that they can profit on it so much easier than they can shows that are coming from outside studios.

There is another new episode of “Elementary” coming up this coming weekend, so we’ll have some other news and previews about that coming in the near future.
