‘Saturday Night Live’ video: Dave Chappelle voices a swan in ridiculous deleted sketch
Sometimes, there are deleted sketches on “Saturday Night Live” that you watch and you wonder precisely why they weren’t in the show in the first place. There is a tendency sometimes for NBC to make poor decisions when it comes to what’s funny; then again, comedy’s subjective! There are certainly plenty of sketches this year alone that we’ve liked and other people hate.
Ultimately, the deleted sketch below from this past episode with Dave Chappelle probably was cut for the right reason: The idea was a charming one, but at the same time there really isn’t a single laugh-out-loud moment in here. Chappelle is voicing a swan within a hotel painting, bragging about why he is the reason for the work of art’s existence given that the other two animals in the painting (voiced by Alex Moffat and Melissa Villasenor) are both ducks.
There is a kinda-funny line in here about “Swan Lake,” but other than that, we can’t say that this is particularly memorable. We’re surprised that nobody wanted to make either more biting, or go the other route and make it a little more sweet and tender. Sometimes, “SNL” can make meaningful sketches work, such as with “Sad Mouse.”
The irony here is that even though she did not actually appear in this sketch, and this sketch didn’t even appear on the show, this is probably the most airtime Villasenor’s had in weeks. It’s often tough for the newcomers to “SNL” to try and find their place; Mikey Day this season is a little bit of an exception, given that he was a writer for the show prior to coming on board so there was already a sense of familiarity that was present there.
