‘Last Week with John Oliver’ finale: All about President-Elect Donald Trump; HBO posts episode online
Tonight, HBO aired its season finale of “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver,” and of course, it was pretty easy to figure out what one of the main stories tonight was going to be about: Donald Trump becoming the President-Elect of the United States.
Before you go into the whole “oh boy, more election talk from a guy who talked constantly about Trump for months,” consider this: Oliver has been a little more conservative speaking about Trump than many other late-night hosts. While he did the epic takedown piece earlier in the year to go along with one on the border wall, for the most part he’s stuck to familiar guns of reporting on a wide array of different stories. He’s actually one of the few people in this space that actually covered the election and Trump responsibly.
Ironically, one of many topics that he covered in the finale was the role of the media and their culpability in helping Trump get elected, to go along with a wide array of other topics like some of his comments in the “60 Minutes” interview earlier tonight and the confidence that many had that he was going to lose. It was all the perfect mixture of “funny, but terrifying because it’s true” that we’ve come to expect from “Last Week Tonight,” and from that vantage point, this was the perfect way for the show to conclude its most-recent season.
If there is one negative, it’s only that Oliver does only do his show once a week — which on paper we understand given the effort and research that goes into it. HBO has used its timeslot at times as a joke and a marketing tool, but having a Sunday night series also does reflect further why some other shows like “Late Night” and “The Daily Show” have an inherent advantage on timely current events. Oliver may be our personal favorite late-night hosts on television, but after so many days of endless coverage of Trump’s election, we’re starting to feel the fatigue. If only we’d received this one Wednesday or even Thursday night, we’d appreciate it even more than we do now (and trust us, we’re still grateful).
As we reported earlier this week, HBO is sharing more or less this whole episode online with current events in mind. You can watch that now over on the show’s official YouTube page. Of course, it is HBO so be aware of language that certainly isn’t safe for work. (Photo: HBO.)

Sh*tty approach…where is the truth…where is the comedy…what
perverted notion is it trying to spew…its a wonder no one just boo’ed
or walked out or it might be a selected audience. A good poison talk.
