Crossover November: Could ‘NCIS’ season 14, ‘Madam Secretary’ function in same world?
Over the course of the month of November, we’re bringing back our recurring Crossover November feature. What does that mean? Basically, we’re going to take an up-close-and-personal look at some of the different shows that are on the air and seeing if there are some common links.
We recently did a piece regarding “Gotham” and much of the CW superhero universe, and the big takeaway that we got from that was that there weren’t too many people altogether interested in making that happen. Today, we’ve got a crossover idea that makes a little bit more sense organically in “Madam Secretary” and “NCIS.” Can this happen, and should it happen? We want to do our part in trying to break all of that down below.
The case for a crossover – First and foremost, we’re talking here about two shows that are going to be airing on CBS, and as a result of that, there is already network synergy there. They both also are set in the same city in Washington DC. It only makes some sense that we would have the two intertwined in some way provided that the producers for both shows want to work with each other. We can also imagine fairly easily a situation in which Elizabeth McCord’s office would collide with an NCIS investigation. Let’s say, for example, that an incident involving a number of Navy sailors occurs in international waters, and there is an investigation that needs to be done on the ground to go along with complicated negotiations with another foreign country. You could also rope in some characters such as the Secretary of the Navy.
In terms of tone, we also think that there is something that would work here. The two series are technically dramas, but there is a little bit of humor here and there.
The case against it – Logistically, it’s always going to be a challenge to get two different shows and casts around each other, especially when they film in different places. Also, we feel like if you’re “NCIS” and you want to do a spin-off, odds are that you are going to work more with one of the other “NCIS” shows. There’s no real need to extend it, even if we have seen “NCIS: Los Angeles” and “Hawaii Five-0” cross paths before. Sometimes because there is a good idea doesn’t mean that it is feasible, and we’re just talking about our own perception here.

I’ve never enjoyed the crossover NCIS epis, but then I’ve never really got into the NCIS spinoffs like I did the original show anyway, so that’s just me.
