‘Hawaii Five-0’ season 7, episode 7 reaction: The meaning of Steve – Catherine moment
Is the door finally closed on Steve and Catherine as a possible couple on “Hawaii Five-0“? Following Friday night’s new episode, it would make some sense if you were feeling a mixture of emotions about everything that came up. Steve was made aware just how much Catherine knew about his intentional to propose, and in turn, he learned that she would’ve said yes.
However, times now are different. He has a relationship with Lynn, and in turn, it appears that she has another mission. Michelle Borth isn’t sticking around for now, and you can read what happened tonight in two very different ways:
1. This was a reminder that the two parties do still care about one another, and maybe that leads to something down the road. We’ve got at least a handful of stories still to tell this season, and we’ll see where we go from there. Before we even get to the hypothetical situation where Alex O’Loughlin leaves the show after season 8, we gotta get that renewal. Given the recent ratings for the series, we’re currently optimistic.
2. This was closure, and an opportunity for Steve to realize that maybe they were ships passing in the night. It could’ve happened, but it didn’t, and this is the chance for him to try and move on.
O’Loughlin offered up his own perception on Steve asking Catherine what she would’ve said in regards to proposing to TVLine, and it feels like he is saying that his character would’ve gone down door #2:
“As far as I’m concerned, he was just curious, because for him to get serious with anyone else — really serious, if that’s what happens — he needs closure on [Catherine], and [hearing her answer that question] gives him that closure. He’s like, ‘OK. How ironic. I guess this just wasn’t in the cards,’ you know.”
One way or another, we certainly hope that Catherine’s time with “Hawaii Five-0” is not over, since there is still story to tell and given her work, plenty of opportunities to bring her back.
