Tonight, MTV is airing their much-anticipated Halloween Special for “Scream,” and we imagine that this is going to be a particularly freaky one given all of the different things that could be occurring there. We’ve got a creepy new island setting, a different sort of mythology, but then also some loose ends that very much need to be tied up in the wake of everything that happened in season 2.
What we’re pleased to remind you of here at the start of this article is that this is not the end of the road for the show in the slightest. We originally had wondered if this would be the series finale, but earlier this month the network confirmed that a third season is coming! There are, however, two caveats you should know about.
1. This season is going to be only six episodes, which is far and away the shortest run for it to date since arriving on MTV. Maybe this short order suggests that we’re about to get a final season, or maybe there’s a small window that the network wants to fill with new episodes.
2. There will be new showrunners stepping aboard for the second straight season. That is a tad more curious, but we cannot quite say we’re surprised by it if for no other reason than that this is a show that can use having an influx of new ideas on a fairly regular basis.
There’s no premiere date just yet for the new season, but our feeling and hope is that we’ll have something again for next summer. That is when things start to get a little bit slow in terms of new programming, and we can use the arrival of something like “Scream” to spice things up a tad.
