‘The X Factor’ UK spoilers: What 5 After Midnight, Gifty Louise, Four of Diamonds will perform for Motown Week

5 AM -

Even though “The X Factor” instituted their new fancy spinning wheel to determine song themes for the live shows this season, we still cannot say that they came up with something innovative. Motown Week? Seriously? We cannot even count how many times we’ve heard these songs on various singing shows over the years.

With this theme in mind, we’re pretty salty / cynical entering this episode that anyone will be able to do anything special with songs we’ve heard a million times over. Still, for now we’re offering up our take on some of these songs below, at least in terms of our current expectations.

5 After Midnight – Get Ready/Reach Out I’ll Be There – Hey, at least it’s some sort of mashup.

Four of Diamonds – You Keep Me Hangin’ On – We suppose that they’ll mostly be exciting because we haven’t seen them on the show in forever.

Freddy Parker – Ain’t No Mountain High Enough – Maybe if Freddy does a really stripped-down, slower version of this song, he could bring something new to it.

Matt Terry – I Heard it Through the Grapevine – Ugh. An overdone song, and not one that really translates well to singing shows.

Ryan Lawrie – Superstition – As we just said, extremely overdone. Good luck trying to do anything new here.

Honey G – No Money No Problems – It’s not exactly the Motown era, but to be fair, it’s not like many people were rapping then.

Saara Aalto – River Deep, Mountain High – She can hit all of the notes here, so this will come down to the performance.

Relley C – Ain’t No Sunshine – While it’s overdone for singing shows, it’s one of the better choices here. Relley can hit all the notes, and also play up some of the somber, powerful undertones in the lyrics.

Emily Middlemas – Stop In the Name of Love – This could be great stripped-down and with the guitar. We’re optimistic.

Gifty Louise – Rockin’ Robin – With Gifty’s performing ability, she could make what is a pretty hokey song choice into something interesting.

Sam Lavery – Hello – Is she doing the Lionel Ritchie song? We’re guessing so, since we don’t know anything else in Motown by this era.
