‘Scream’ renewed for season 3 by MTV, will run for six episodes
We hear about October surprises often in the world of politics — here’s one that we’ve got in terms of scripted television!
Today, MTV confirmed that they are renewing “Scream” for a third season. While this may only be for an additional six episodes, let’s be honest — this is six more episodes than we previously assumed that the show would be getting. Our unfounded assumption was that the two-hour Halloween Special airing next week was going to be an easy way for the writers to tie up loose ends and offer up a proper end to the series. The reason we thought that was rather simple: The ratings for the show aren’t great. Yet, there is a tremendous amount of enthusiasm for it on social media, and that attention may be in part one of the reasons why it is coming back.
For those wondering, TVLine reports that the third season will have new showrunners, which continues the trend of there being a lot of creative turnarounds with this show. We’d say that this is odd, but at the same time it may not be as strange as you would think. This is similar in some ways to what is going on with Lifetime’s “UnREAL,” which continues to change around people at the top as it looks to find some stability entering its own third season.
What we wonder with this renewal is this: Can you continue to put the Lakewood Six through the sort of physical and psychological torment that they’ve been through to date? Maybe you bring back a few cast members, or maybe you start over altogether. Without seeing the Halloween Special, it is hard to speculate on an extreme level about what the future of the show will be.
