‘Elementary’ season 5 spoilers: Show boss on Shinwell’s presence
With the season 5 premiere of “Elementary” right around the corner, doesn’t now feel like as good a time as any to get a little bit more scoop on some of the key players? We like to think so, which is why we’re glad to bring a little bit of info to the table in terms of the mysterious presence of Shinwell Johnson (Nelsan Ellis). He’s inspired by a Sir Arthur Conan Doyle character, and within this show he is a reformed criminal with a past connection to Joan who could prove to be an asset — but that doesn’t mean that he always will be.
In previewing this character’s role at the start of the season, which is going to pick up right in the middle of some action, executive producer Rob Doherty said the following to Entertainment Weekly:
“I’d say the most important connective tissue at the start of the season will be Shinwell — getting to know him, finding a way to implement him without tempting fate with regards to his attempts to reform. Just as last year, Morland was certainly a foreboding presence in the very beginning, but he wasn’t exactly a threat; he didn’t present as one very early. As the season kicks off, we’ll delve a little deeper into Shinwell, who he is and how he’s going to function over the course of the season for good, bad, or other. And yes, we’ll have a string of very interesting, high-concept standalone cases.”
The best way to look at Shinwell is that he’s someone who you could form a cohesive opinion on over time, but it’s not exactly one that may be constructed quickly. For those wondering, Doherty also mentions in this aforementioned interview that he is of course interested in bringing back Natalie Dormer as Moriarty, but nothing is confirmed on this at present.
