‘The Amazing Race Canada 4’ finale review: Did Jillian & Emmett, Steph & Kristen, or Joel & Ashley win?

Cast -Tonight, the finale of “The Amazing Race Canada” aired on CTV, and we gotta say that it was one of the more entertaining ones we’ve seen over the course of the show’s four-year history. There was a lot of drama, there were some pretty well-designed tasks, and at the end, we have arguably one of our most worthy winning teams to date.

In the end, it’s hard to be mad over a Steph & Kristen win. While Jillian & Emmett were also dominant physically, the two ladies were completely consistent throughout the entire leg. They were never in enormous danger of going home, they won Express Passes, they weren’t afraid to use the U-Turn, and they stayed positive and upbeat throughout the majority of the season. Having them win the final leg just felt like the natural conclusion of the journey for this season.

As for our runners-up, Jillian & Emmett in particular were great television this season, and while we know not everyone likes having repeat reality contestants, we’re thrilled that they were added to this since it’s always good for drama to have a team who fights constantly with each other. We do think you put them on any future season, and they’ve got a pretty good shot at emerging at the top. The biggest thing that they probably need is distance, since you could feel that some of the tension from their relationship was still there while running this season.

We’re not going to pretend that finale legs are typically that great when it comes to tasks, since there is a lot of time-filling that goes on with only three teams. Also, it’s structurally harder to edit the show when the entire race comes down to the one winner versus how every team places, including the team in last. Still, this was a worthy finale to a very worthy season with some smart ideas and just enough drama, and as much as we loved Mickey & Pete in season 2, Steph & Kristen may be our favorite “Amazing Race Canada” winners to date. Congrats to the two of them! (For the record, we’d probably put them in the top five winning teams ever including the US edition — we don’t want to go any further than that because of recency bias.) Grade: B+.
