‘Dancing with the Stars 23’ prediction: Why Laurie Hernandez, Calvin Johnson are runaway favorites

Laurie -Given that tomorrow marks the season 23 premiere for “Dancing with the Stars,” now does certainly feel like the right time to start getting to our primary order of preseason business now: Figuring out who is going to win.

Unfortunately, we don’t exactly think that this is a tricky season to figure out in advance. Given that we’re mere months removed from the end of the Rio Olympics and Laurie Hernandez is a gold-medal recipient of the Final Five team, she’s far and aware our pick to win. We wish there was some more drama to it, but gymnasts are physically strong and already have experience performing specific moves in front of an audience. While dancing and doing gymnastics routines are not the same, they have more in common than IndyCar driving or being a Governor, which are some of the skills other contestants are bringing into this season. She’s also going to have a huge following.

As of right now, we’re going to put Detroit Lions alum Calvin Johnson as #2 on the list, given that this is a guy who is extremely gifted in his own right and still fairly well-known. He retired far earlier than expected, and that story may have him fresher of mind than many other football players who take part.

As for who we think will be the first person out, it may surprise you that we don’t think it will be Rick Perry. Conservative figures tend to do better on this show than you would assume going into the season; we actually think bigger candidates could be someone like a Vanilla Ice or even a Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds. They’re far more well-known, but sometimes nostalgic music icons don’t do all that well. We think that Derek Hough will help Marilu Henner stick around early, and people like Jana Kramer have too big of a story.

The real wild-card to us this season is James Hinchcliffe, given we know so little about him going in given that we don’t follow his sport.
