‘America’s Got Talent’ finalist spotlight: Jon Dorenbos
“America’s Got Talent” over the years has become increasingly friendly to magicians. There was an era where magic acts rarely even made it to the finale, and we’re now at a point in which making it to the finale is pretty commonplace. Heck, we just had Mat Franco win not too long ago!
Could Jon Dorenbos have a real shot at this? As we’re about to explain in the latest edition of our finalist spotlight series, there are certainly some things going for him!
Path so far – He entered the show as a magician who just so happened to also be a football player for the Philadelphia Eagles, and the combination of story and talent led to him getting a golden buzzer from Ne-Yo during the Judge Cuts round. Since that time, he has soared through the two live shows without too much of an effort.
Strengths – As the longest-tenured player on the Eagles, Dorenbos has probably the most committed fan following out there in football fans. Given that he is a long snapper, the sort of position that is not often bestowed the same amount of attention as a quarterback of wide receiver, we don’t think fans of other times look at him as the enemy. His skill is fantastic, but he’s also got a very clear audience who likes him for more than just that.
Weaknesses – There are some other magic acts in the finale. Specifically, we’re talking about The Clairvoyants, who are incredible at what it is that they do. Of course, we do also worry that his schedule, which now includes NFL regular-season games, could potentially get in the way of rehearsal time.
Odds of winning – As of right now, we’d say that Jon has the best chance of the magic acts remaining to win the entire show, but we also don’t think we’d consider him the favorite since the show has tended to favor singers in terms of placement on the live shows so far. We can imagine him taking home the grand prize, but it’s far from a sure thing.
