‘America’s Got Talent’ finalist spotlight: Laura Bretan
Laura Bretan’s journey has been an interesting one on “America’s Got Talent.” From the moment she first performed on the show this season, she was a favorite of the judges and even earned the golden buzzer from Mel B. For most casual fans, we also think she’s fairly well-liked even if she needed a little bit of help to make it through the semifinals.
Yet, is a lack of support from some diehard fans hurting her? That’s something that we want to try and track in our finalist spotlight series today!
The path so far – It was pretty smooth sailing for the opera singer until she uncovered a wall in the semifinals, one where she required a little bit of help in order to advance to the next round. This was considered a big surprise at the time, and it led to questions as to if young singer Grace VanderWaal split some of her votes.
Strengths – She’s a tremendous singer, and probably better at opera than anyone one the show following Jackie Evancho. She also comes across as humble and likable, and doesn’t have the ego that some kids with her level of success have.
Weaknesses – The biggest one for Laura is her own history. We’ve gotten dozens of messages over the summer about whether or not it’s fair that someone who was a star on “Romania’s Got Talent” (who eventually went on to win that) should be able to compete here. Our answer is simple: It’s nonsense. It’s probably more unfair that some “America’s Got Talent” contestants have gone on to be on “American Idol,” give that those shows at least share viewers. How many viewers out there in America saw Laura on that show? She’s still had to get votes like everyone else here to advance.
Odds of winning – Moderately low. As talented as Laura is, if she needed a save to get through the semifinals, especially while performing at the end of the night, she’s got a rough road ahead of her here.
