‘Poldark’ season 2: Actress on changing controversial scene from books

Elizabeth -

Let’s start this “Poldark” article off with a bit of warning: If you have not read the books or seen the original show, and as a result of that want to remain unspoiled as to everything that is coming up, you should stop reading now. Otherwise, feel free to continue.

What we are talking about here is the aftermath of some controversy regarding a scene that was changed from the original source material, one where it was interpreted by some as Ross Poldark raping Elizabeth during a key encounter. As for why this change is coming, Heida Reed spoke out recently on the subject to the Daily Mail as to the role she played in this particular decision:

“[The scene] did change, as we had conversations. It was a collaborative decision. Initially, it was a bit more intense, but we felt it wasn’t right.”

Meanwhile, the show’s production company Mammoth Screen already released a statement of their own, explaining how they made a key decision to change things up:

“Winston Graham’s version of events is open to interpretation. Ours is not. Many fans haven’t read the books and don’t appreciate spoilers, so we invite all viewers to watch the episode when it comes out and then make up their own mind.”

We’re sure that this decision to change the intent has upset some fans, but we’re personally all right with it from the vantage point that this should be viewed as its own adaptation for this particular era, and not a line for line recreation. For those more interested in seeing the other interpretation, the original series and the books remain out there.
