‘Devious Maids’ canceled by Lifetime; season 5 hopes dashed

It looks like that crazy season 4 finale for “Devious Maids” on Lifetime is going to be the last bit of craziness you’re going to see.

According to Deadline, the network has opted to not give the series from executive producers Marc Cherry and Eva Longoria a fifth season despite that Marisol cliffhanger, with ratings more than likely serving as the primary factor. In a sense, we certainly understand the move: The ratings in the 18-49 demographic for season 4 were down 35% from season 3, and those live figures are the ones that matter more so than anything it is doing via DVR.

We do understand at the same time some of the arguments that could be out there displaying some frustration about the show getting canceled when “UnREAL” gets lower ratings on the same night. The only thing we can say to that is mostly that the reality show spoof gets a whole lot more publicity and brings more attention to the network; also, it has some Emmy nominations under its belt now.

The biggest bummer we have for “Devious Maids” fans is that Lifetime, which has certainly canceled other shows around this point over the years, did not want to at least give a shortened final season to resolve some cliffhangers and allow everyone to have a happy ending. It’s not like they have that many other shows on their schedule that they have to attend to at the moment.

Ultimately, we’ll see if anything else happens, but for now let us know your reactions in the comments.
