Fall Preview 2016: All about ‘Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life’

There are a wide array of different new shows coming to television over the course of the fall, and one of the biggest ones you’ll have to wait until November to see. It’s not exactly a new show per se, but it hasn’t been on the air in quite some time. “Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life” may not have a lot in common with the BBC’s “Sherlock,” but it is adopting its pattern of telling its stories via a series of 90-minute installments. There will be four of them, and it should offer closure to Stars Hollow after so much waiting.

For more on why this should prove to be a massive hit, take a look at the latest entry in our Fall Preview series below.

Premiere Date and Timeslot Competition – November 25.  There’s no real direct competition here in terms of other shows, since there’s nothing else even airing on this day in terms of new programming. The big surprise is that Netflix of all people would choose to put something out into the universe on Black Friday, when much of their audience could be out deal-hunting more so than anything.

Logline – “Three generations of Gilmore women grapple with change and the complicated bonds of family during one year at Stars Hollow.”

Cast – Lauren Graham, Alexis Biedel, and Kelly Bishop are all back. Many familiar faces including Scott Patterson, Jared Padalecki, Matt Czuchry, and Melissa McCarthy are also returning, but their roles may be rather small due to other commitments.

Trailer – Unlike many other shows we’ve spotlighted over time, this isn’t so much a trailer as it just is a teaser of footage that won’t actually be in the show. Still, it serves as a reminder of the relationship between Lorelai and Rory, and a reminder that the more things change in the world, the more they stay the same in Stars Hollow. This is very much TV comfort food at its finest.

Overall Take – If you haven’t watched the original, odds are that you’ll have a harder time buying into the hype. This is “Gilmore Girls” for fans of the original, and if you count yourself as firmly in this camp, all signs point towards you loving “A Year in the Life” and wishing there are many more years to come.
