‘Agents of SHIELD’ season 4: Gabriel Luna on playing new Ghost Rider

Agents of SHIELD -

The fourth season of “Agents of SHIELD” is coming up on ABC later this year, and there are certainly plenty of reasons to be excited about it. One of the biggest reasons above all others is simply due to the opportunity to see a very different version of a beloved character that has been out there to date in Ghost Riders. Most people are familiar with Johnny Blaze, who was played by Nicolas Cage in the feature films. However, Robbie Reyes is the newest character with the Spirit of Vengeance, and this is who Gabriel Luna is going to play.

Just how surprising a reveal was it that Reyes was going to be on the show this season? Let’s just say that even Luna was surprised to learn the news. In speaking on the subject of his casting to The Hollywood Reporter, he had the following to say about the process:

“I knew about Johnny Blaze and Danny Ketch, those were really my generation of the Ghost Rider … I in fact did not know that the Ghost Rider spirit of vengeance was now inhabiting Robbie Reyes now. When [Marvel TV head] Jeph [Loeb] and [Agents of SHIELD executive producers] Jed [Whedon] and Mo [Tancharoen] finally cracked the lid on what I’d be playing, I was shocked because when they called me they were very secretive as to what it was. When I finally found out what it was, I did my research and I looked into it, and that’s when I discovered that there was this new incarnation of Ghost Rider.”

For the most part, not too much has been said about the “SHIELD” adaptation of the character, but we imagine that there will be some similarities with the recent comics. More than anything else, we’re just glad that Marvel managed to get a familiar comic character onto this show; hopefully, it works well within everything else that they are doing.
