‘Jessica Jones’ season 2, and the search for a capable adversary

Even though the second season of “Jessica Jones” may not be airing on Netflix for over a year, the show has to start looking ahead to some major challenges in advance. From this vantage point, there may not be one any more looming or severe than trying to find another threatening, capable adversary to take on the title character.

Here is the biggest problem: It’s almost impossible to surpass Kilgrave, arguably the best TV supervillain of all of 2016. The guy was terrifying in terms of what he was capable of, and also the specific sort of torment he performed on Jessica. Therefore, you can’t just pick a cartoony villain out of a hat and hope that they work to a similar effect. This is a choice that will take some time, as you need to figure out the right way to go. Based on what executive producer Melissa Rosenberg told TVLine recently, it could mean that you end up getting more than one villain the second time around in order to change things up:

“It’s a work in progress … The bar was set so freaking high — David Tennant has no equal — so I’m not even trying to go there. The biggest mistake I could make is to try to repeat that. So it will be a very different kind of antagonist… or antagonists.”

So when will we have further information on this? Well, we’re marking our calendars for some point in the distant future. Best to not get the hopes up when we are still staring in the face of a particularly long wait.
