We’ve been hearing for a solid year now that “Gotham” wants to play around with the Mad Hatter character, so we’re certainly rather glad now to know that it’s officially happening!
Sources confirm that Benedict Samuel, otherwise known as the infamous member of the Wolves on “The Walking Dead” stuck in the middle of the Carol / Morgan storyline, will be playing the cunning, manipulative character otherwise known as Jervis Tetch on the show. It’s not entirely clear how long he will stay put for, but we’d at least like to presume that he has a fairly sizable arc. Then again, one of the reasons we’ve personally felt that the Mad Hatter gets ignored a little bit over the years is because he does have some inherent similarities to both the Joker and the Riddler, and in some ways the show has already taken on both of these characters. They’ll have to really work to make Tetch seem somewhat different.
One of the other challenges for “Gotham” at present is simply how many villains they have roaming around the city. In addition to the regulars in the form of Penguin and Nygma, you’ve also got Mr. Freeze, Hugo Strange, Clayface, and Fish Mooney all still crawling around out there. It’s exciting that there is such a big pool of villains to choose from for stories here and there, but the writers have to figure out a way to service all of them so that nobody gets left behind. We’d assume at this point that this could be a rather significant challenge.
