‘The Vampire Diaries’ Lifespan: Should season 8 be the series’ last?

tvd -For the latest edition in our Lifespan series that is happening throughout the month of July, we are focusing on a show that has certainly been the subject of many exit rumors even without our help on “The Vampire Diaries.” This is a show that helped to really lift The CW at a time when the ydidn’t have a monster hit, but they have passed the baton in many ways to the DC Universe. Meanwhile, they also no longer have their original star in Nina Dobrev, and are airing on a night in Fridays that has shown to be rather difficult for it.

So when you consider all of this, is there really a chance for there to be a season 9? We’re not ruling it out.

The case for season 8 to be the last – One of the simplest reasons comes just from the statistics. You don’t want to see a show that once was a titan leave with a whimper, and at present, we are getting closer and closer to this being a possibility. If season 8 is the last, you have a real shot at ending things with a bang, and coming up with some great tributes to turn this last year into something special.

Also, you get a chance to end the show with Kat Graham still a part of the cast. She has already made it clear that she plans on leaving after this season, and it would certainly be sad to see the show continue on without her and Elena.

The case to keep going – This, meanwhile, is as simple as trusting in the writers and their vision. If they think that they’ve got some extra-special idea when it comes to how to make another season work, why not roll with it? Much of the decision here could come from what is happening in the writers room, and then the willingness of people like Paul Wesley and Ian Somerhalder to return for another go of things.

We just hope that one way or another, The CW makes a decision before we get close to the end of the season. We just don’t want to see it have a half-hearted ending that comes together at the last minute, similar to what “Castle” had last season.
