Is ‘Veep’ season 5 new tonight on HBO? Early season 6 plans
Last week on HBO, “Veep” concluded its fifth season with what had to be one of the most epic finales that we’ve seen so far this year. How else do you explain the present set of circumstances. Not only did Selina lose the election vote in Congress, but she is not even a Vice-President at this point, either. She’s now out on her own, and doesn’t have any strong political influence for the first time ever. This is going to make for a really interesting story, and it is definitely one that we are interested in seeing play out.
Unfortunately, with this past week being the finale, you’re not going to see it play out for some time. There’s no official premiere date just yet for season 6, and while we’d love to say for certain it is the spring of next year, that’s not confirmed and sometimes premium cable networks do change things around. We are seeing that, for example, with the upcoming season of “Shameless.”
At the moment, though, nobody can say for sure what season 6 is going to hold. At the moment it’s a clean slate, and this is something showrunner David Mandel wanted rather than everyone just getting the similar sort of show all over again. This is something that he explained further in a chat to The Hollywood Reporter:
“Over this last week, after people knew she had lost, a lot of the things I read said, ‘They’ll find a way to make her veep and the show will go back to what it was.’ It made me so happy that we didn’t do that. Who would want to go backwards to a show about her being vice president again? That show was done and was done great. We’re going to get to see the former president of the United States in the next stage of her career and to some extent, the quest for relevancy. How does she live in a world where, when she turns on the television, she’s going to see this other president? I’ve never been happier to not have done what people guessed.”
This is a big move getting Selina out of the White House, but “Veep” has earned our trust enough for us to feel pretty darn sure that this will lead to excellent television.
