‘The X Factor’ UK: Louis Walsh talks return, failures of last season
Was “The X Factor” a disappointment last year because Louis Walsh wasn’t on it? We wouldn’t say that; instead, it was because there was some questionable talent, unfortunate twists like the Six-Chair Challenge that were overly stressful, and then ultimately an overall tone that didn’t excite anyone. This show is about finding talent, but we do think from time to time it is forgotten that this is also a show about fun. Louis can add to that, but he doesn’t always.
In a new interview on the BBC Radio 2 show “Paper Cuts” with Kate Thornton (per Digital Spy) talking about the show, the music manager does make it clear that he feels in some ways that he does bring a lot to the show, and also that he made it clear to his longtime fan Simon Cowell that there was something missing when he looked back and watched the show play out:
“I still think it’s the best show on TV … It’s the most talked-about show on TV. I know I wasn’t there last year – and it wasn’t as good! But I’m back! … I think being away from the show for a year was a really good thing for me. Ratings weren’t good, so I knew watching the first show it wasn’t going to work. I called Simon really late that night, and said, ‘You’ve messed with it too much. It’s not working!’ He didn’t say anything for a second, and then he said, ‘Maybe you’re right’.
Overall, we do think that pairing Simon with Louis, Sharon Osbourne, and Nicole Scherzinger is a way to at least bring some fun back into the series. From here, there are a myriad of other issues that will need to be worked out. First and foremost, the series is going to have to figure out a way in which to ensure that the format doesn’t take itself too seriously; then, there will need to be some genuinely great talent that turns up.
