This may not come as too great of a surprise for those of you who caught the season 1 finale for “Legends of Tomorrow,” but it is now official that Ciara Renee will not be returning as a series regular as Kendra Saunders a.k.a. Hawkgirl.
Ultimately, this seems to be mostly for story reasons. For much of the first season, we had an entire narrative in some ways framed around the complicated history that she and Carter Hall (Falk Hentschel, who was a recurring guest star) had with Vandal Savage, who was killed in the finale as the team was able to murder him in three separate eras at the same time. Without Vandal around, these two heroes lose much of their purpose; also, it makes some more sense that they would want to go off and try to live something resembling a normal life.
In a statement per Deadline, show executive producer Marc Guggenheim made it clear that it was not until they started looking towards next season that they realized that there really was not any further story left to tell with them in the immediate future:
“We went through the team, made a list of all the characters and started to think of stories for them. When we got to Hawkman and Hawkgirl, we had trouble coming up with stories. The bow was tied so tightly and neatly with their story in the finale, that everything we thought of felt very forced. After 4000 years, they were no longer under the specter of Vandal, and we felt they need some time off. Bringing them back to the team as soon as the the beginning of Season 2 felt premature.”
Given that they are still out there, we presume that in due time, we could end up seeing them once more. This is a big universe, and with four-part crossovers coming we like to assume that just about anything is possible.
