‘Outlander’ season 2, episode 6 reaction: Writer / producer on Claire cliffhanger
Saturday night’s “Outlander” episode was one of the most brutal ones that we’ve had a chance to see over the course of the show’s run, largely because we had multiple examples of game and character-changing moments. Perhaps the biggest one was Jamie trying to find a way to weasel out of a promise to not kill Black Jack Randall, and eventually taking part of a duel with him that delivered him a devastating injury. In the midst of this, Claire began to bleed while watching on, and the life of her baby is now in jeopardy.
There is quite a bit of story to come, and in teasing what is coming up, writer-producer Matthew B. Roberts said the following to The Hollywood Reporter about scenes that will surprise both show fans and book readers alike:
“The next episode starts with Claire in a fog, in a dream state. She’ll go to the hospital and we’ll discover what happened with her baby. It’s such an emotional journey for both Claire and the fans as well. There’s a lot that will take things to a new place for the fans, even the ones who have read the books. We’ve been trying to do things just a little bit differently from the books in each episode even though the main, expected events still happen so there’s an element of surprise for everyone.”
What the show has done effectively so far is find a way to capture the spirit of the books at times more so than each particular event; Dragonfly in Amber is such a rich and dense book that it would be hard to hammer every detail home on TV. We’ll get a further chance to see what is coming next over the coming days, so be on the lookout!

I don’t feel that Jamie tried to “weasel” his way out of keeping his promise to Claire. The scene with Fergus in BJR’s room (the red coat), and the man shutting the door made you aware of what was going to happen to Fergus. As Dougal said to Jamie in season 1 The Wedding “you know what that man is capable of”. I would have lost all sense of any promise made about a stranger (Frank) if I were aware of a child being abused, especially one that I am close to.
As for Claire, she was already bleeding the night before at the hospital, and she made the choice of putting her child in jeopardy versus the life of Frank by going to the duel. Jamie didn’t cause that.
I’m not saying that Jamie has zero responsibility in this tragedy, but both he and Claire share in it.
