‘Call the Midwife’ season 5, episode 7 reaction (PBS): Contraception chaos

Call the Midwife -Tonight’s new episode of “Call the Midwife” is the penultimate one of the season, and it may be one of the most dramatic ones that we’ve seen so far. (Warning: Some spoilers lie ahead!)

For one, the arrival of the contraceptive pill in this episode sent shockwaves through Poplar, and the way in which this was presented on TV was rather fantastic. After all, the series really reflected the dilemma that was present for many of these characters. On the surface, of course they wanted to be able to handle some of these changes, but at the same time, this quickly proved itself to be a struggle of science versus faith. This manifested in patients, and the divide between Dr. Turner and some of the nuns was clear. This isn’t the sort of issue that can be resolved in the show, mostly for one simple reason: It’s not even resolved in life. It’s going to be impossibly hard to figure this out.

What’s also worth noting here is that this may be a small victory for Turner in a season full of hardship, given that he is starting to realize the danger of some of his past teaching methods, and then also some of his own habits coming back to bite him.

This episode was also a big one for the characters of Tom and Barbara. Want to get more? Then head over here to read our full review of the show from earlier this year.

Ultimately, there are some more important stories coming up in the finale, especially when it comes to the Dr. Turner character. Rest assured that he may have to make some of the biggest decisions that he has over the course of the entire show, and it could end up leaving a few characters in a more devastated position than ever before. We’ll have some more on that in the near future.
