‘Saturday Night Live’ music: Drake performs ‘One Dance’

SNL -At the moment, we certainly feel like there are very few people within the world of music killing it quite like Drake. “Views from the 6” was a chart-topper from the very moment it was released, and with “Hotline Bling” recently, he had one of the most popular songs of the past year.

For his first performance on “Saturday Night Live” this weekend, he chose to hit the stage with a different new track in “One Dance” that had a mixture of elements to it. He did a little bit of singing, but it still had a vibe of some of his earlier more rap-based tracks. Also, it had a beat and a tone that was at times a little more upbeat than some of his more melancholy songs. (We still remember “Find Your Live” in this vein.)

Overall, it was a nice start to the show for him. It was competent, and certainly appealing to many of his longtime fans. Yet, at the same exact time we’re not sure there was anything about it that will stand out for people who are not already fans of him.

We’ll be back soon with more on the second song; stay tuned! Update: The second song was entitled “Hype,” and it was a little bit more of a traditional Drake rap song. It’s firmly in his wheelhouse, and probably a perfect song for late in the show since it’ll wake people up a little bit. This is when many us are falling asleep, after all.
