‘Once Upon a Time’ season 5 finale: Lana Parrilla on Regina’s ‘happy ending’ prospects
Is there happiness to come for Regina Mills on “Once Upon a Time“? It’s a complicated question, and with that of course comes a rather-complicated answer. We would like to think that such an end is possible for her, and so does Lana Parrilla. We don’t think anyone out there wants to see this character sad and miserable, given that we’ve seen this other side of her now, and therefore know that she can be redeemed.
In previewing this upcoming story to Entertainment Weekly, Parrilla was careful in describing her perception on a happy ending, making it clear that for different people, it of course can mean a wide array of different things:
“I guess everyone can define what a happy ending is differently. Regina said it once before, ‘My happy ending is finally feeling at peace in the world.’ Really, it’s feeling at peace with herself. Is she there yet? No, because she has this internal conflict where she’s constantly being teased and toyed with this darkness inside of her and doesn’t know what to do with it. As far as having a family, that all contributes to this happy ending. Having loved ones and being loved is a part of Regina’s happiness. It’s also what sustains her and encourages her to keep making the right decisions. I just want to be careful that a happy ending isn’t defined by a partner, and being with a partner. It’s much more complicated than that. It really starts with self. That’s what Regina’s really trying to achieve, is finding that love within herself and that peace within herself where she can forgive herself for the things that she’s done in her life. I think that ultimately will be her happy ending.”
Do we think that there is a chance that Robin’s death throws Regina down a dark path? Absolutely, but we hope that we all see the journey through and see her on the other side with that happiness. Judging from what we’ve seen from promotional material and the like for the upcoming finale, we know that this upcoming story is going to test her in ways she has not been in some time. Specifically, it may try to bring a certain Evil Queen out of her.
