‘Sons of Anarchy’ spin-off will be titled ‘Mayans MC’; Kurt Sutter finds writer
Many months after we first heard that “Sons of Anarchy” was going to be getting a spin-off of sorts about the Mayans motorcycle club featured on the show, we finally have a few more details today.
Per The Hollywood Reporter, this new series will be fittingly titled “Mayans MC,” and will follow a chapter of the group that was seen on the flagship FX series. It will not be set in the same parts of California as the original series, and it is not clear if any characters from “Sons of Anarchy” will be around.
Original series creator Kurt Sutter has also found a co-creator / writer for the pilot script in Elgin James, who he explains is the right person to take on this particular story with these characters:
“I wanted to find a strong, unique Latino voice. Because I didn’t think a white guy from Jersey should be writing about Latin culture and traditions. Elgin is that voice.”
The original report notes that James is a former member of a street gang himself, and it’s certainly possible that he could draw from some of those experiences as he develops and cultivates this new show. It’s of course a smart idea for FX to want to continue what was one of their most successful franchises ever, and part of the thing about the “Sons of Anarchy” brand is that there is a never-ending amount of stories that can be cultivated since there are so many different chapters and MCs all over the country, and in some ways, even the world.
We’ll have more on the prospective show as there is more reported; for now, let us know what you think about the idea in the comments!
