‘The Big Bang Theory’ season 9 finale: Show boss on Leonard, Penny ‘ceremony’

The season 9 finale of “The Big Bang Theory” is coming your way on Thursday, and over the past few days, what we’ve wondered is rather simple: What really makes this finale special? Getting aboard Judd Hirsch as Leonard’s father is tremendous, but usually meeting new family members seems like a February sweeps event for a sitcom than something that you need to end your season on.

As it turns out, the story of the finale may be more about having everything come full-circle for Leonard and Penny this season. If you remember back to this past episode of the show, one of the big stories that came out of it was that Leonard’s mom Beverly resented the fact that she was not invited to her own son’s wedding to Penny. The spontaneity of the occasion looks to have caused hurt feelings, so this is a chance to turn that around and give loved ones a chance to celebrate beyond just a live stream.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, executive producer Steven Molaro did a good job of setting this up further with the following:

“Their wedding at beginning of the season, when you got into the vows, it got sweet and lovely very quickly but it didn’t quite carry the weight of an actual ceremony with family and friends … That’s at least Penny’s goal: to try and make it up to her mother-in-law a little bit. But that means we have new characters coming to town and meeting for the first time. The way they get along may be enough story for before we actually get to the ceremony.”

One other thing that could come out of this particular finale is that Leonard’s father and Sheldon’s mother apparently hit it off, and that could make things even more awkward than they would be otherwise … and they were already pretty awkward.
