‘The Big Bang Theory’ season 9 video: Mom vs. mom — with Leonard’s dad thrown in

When the finale of “The Big Bang Theory” airs on CBS Thursday night, we’re going to have a chance to see someone we’ve long been excited to have as a part of the show: Judd Hirsch! The sitcom icon will be appearing as Leonard’s father, and in the sneak peek below you can see a pretty funny (and tense) back-and-forth between him and Leonard’s mom Beverly (Christine Baranski).

While Hirsch’s appearance is a big selling point for us when it comes to this episode, most of the attention in the promo below is focused on the battle between Beverly and Sheldon’s mother (Laurie Metcalf), who is going to get into more than a few arguments with her on the Bible and of course many other subjects.

Does this episode feel like a finale? That’s the part of this that we are still struggling with, since you can make a case that most of what we’re getting a chance to see here feels like a February sweeps episode of the show, complete with big-name guest stars and memorable moments. Usually, though, finales bring the story forward in a significant way, such as last year when Penny and Leonard decided that they were going to run off and get married. Maybe there is something of this same sort of importance happening here, and then show is just doing a less-than-fantastic job at showcasing it. Or, maybe that is the plan all along.
