‘Saturday Night Live’ music: Alicia Keys performs ‘In Common’

SNL -When Alicia Keys was announced as the musical guest for this weekend’s episode of “Saturday Night Live,” we were intrigued, largely because it’s been a while since we’ve heard any new music from her as a casual listener.

With that said, it was a smart bit of network synergy for NBC to have her on this show, given that she is going to be a coach on the upcoming fall season of “The Voice” alongside Miley Cyrus, who was the host and musical guest for the premiere of the show. This marked an opportunity to get her further into the public eye, which could have people remembering her more over the coming months.

As for the first song that Keys performed, it was a track entitled “In Common” that she first released a matter of days ago, Much like with NBC, it was perfect synergy on her part to debut the song for many people on the show. This was a reminder of the power and the range that Keys has in her voice; however, at the same time if we had to label one part of this an issue, we’d say that the melody of the song didn’t really lend itself well to getting hooked in your brain.

We’ll be back soon with more on her second song. Update: We’ve now heard it, but unfortunately we cannot really identify much about it lyrically or stylistically. We’ll try to update with a video tomorrow, but we actually enjoyed it more musically than the first song. Update 2: This song is entitled “Hallelujah.”
