‘Faking It’ season 3, episode 8 review: Sabrina, Amy steal Felix’s thunder

The further and further we get into the third season of MTV’s “Faking It,” the more and more clear it becomes just how complicated things are. While in the past it has seemed as though all eyes are on Karma, on Tuesday night’s new episode it felt a little more like Amy at the center of everything.

Look at this way. On one side, she has Karma, a person who has loved in the past, but has moved away from somewhat because she knows the feeling is not mutual. Meanwhile, on the other side she’s got Felix, someone who clearly does care about her but is trying to keep the rules of his sobriety. Tonight, we added a third side officially in the form of Sabrina, who Amy kissed after taking a stand against labels at school. Our heart goes out to Felix here, especially since he was about to drop a huge romantic gesture on her, something initially suggested by Karma as a means to push Sabrina further away.

This all made for the same sort of delicious drama that “Faking It,” ironically a comedy, is known for, but sooner or later we do wish a show would stop with the whole “of course they approach right as the two parties are kissing” trope that has been done a billion times. Also, Amy and Sabrina’s relationship is slightly flawed in that we barely know the latter, including what we’re meant to think about her. We applaud the show for tackling transgender storylines for having Noah talk Shane his truth, but who else feels like Shane’s eventually going to break his trust? Also, the reveal this week was slightly spoiled by us thanks to having the knowledge that the show was specifically casting a transgender character quite some time ago.

Now, a random thought: Is anyone ‘shipping Laurel and Liam? We’re not sure we are just yet, but they have a really fun back-and-forth that we’re starting to really enjoy. They’ve been the highlight of the past two episodes, especially when there hasn’t been a ton of comedy elsewhere. Grade: B-.
