There is a reason why the final four episodes of “Gotham” this season are especially exciting; it’s what happens when you get an iconic DC Comics villain like Azrael in the mix.
In the video below, you can see Ben McKenzie, James Frain, BD Wong, and many other cast members all collectively discuss what we saw at the end of this past episode, which was Theo Galavan emerging under a new name. As it turns out, this is just a part of the process. While he’s back, he does not exactly understand who he is or what he is capable of. That’s the job of Hugo Strange to steer him in the right direction.
Through Strange’s tutelage, it appears as though he is able to convince Galavan that he really is 11th-century assassin Azrael, and his target is none other than Detective James Gordon. As McKenzie said, this creates further challenges for him in the “bizarre reality” that is this show. Maybe at the end of this episode Gordon can gain an upper hand, but it’s not going to come easily for him. The man just managed to get his name cleared, and now he has both Azrael and also Mr. Freeze to deal with. What he doesn’t realize yet is that by the end of the season, a third villain could also emerge from the rubble.
Ultimately, just don’t expect the story of Azrael to end in one week’s time; this is going to be a journey that takes a little bit of time to unravel. Let’s just hope that it is exciting every step of the way.
