‘Lucifer’ season 2: Premiere date speculation, more on Tom Ellis drama

All good things must come to an end, and for fans of “Lucifer,” that means that the show is going to be coming to a close Monday night. It’s been a nice run, but the good news is that there will be a second season to continue the story of the title character, played with great zeal by Tom Ellis.

As for when the show will return, that’s still an interesting question. One of the reasons for its premiere in January was to put the show following “The X-Files,” which turned out to be a great thing when it comes to it getting off to a good start. Since that point, the show has done a reasonably good job of keeping its audience. Sure, it did lose about 40% of its premiere crowd in viewers 18-49 since the premiere in live+same day ratings, but at the same time it has been fairly steady for the past five weeks or so. In that time, it has averaged around a 1.3 rating, which is better than many of Fox’s other scripted entries aside from “Gotham” and “Empire.”

It’s possible that with the show’s proven track record, they move it to fall and give it a longer order than just 13 episodes. With the future of “The X-Files” unclear, it’s possible that this gets more of a traditional run out of “Gotham.” If nothing else, it remains a midseason entry with 13 episodes.

There are so many reasons why Fox’s schedule for the new season is complicated. You’ve got a “Prison Break” revival to put on the schedule, and to go along with that, you also have to consider here that “American Idol” is over. That frees up at least two hours of programming from January onward.
