‘Outlander’ season 2, episode 3 reaction: Caitriona Balfe on Claire’s Jack Randall decision

Claire -

At around the midway point on this weekend’s new episode of “Outlander,” we definitely anticipated a moment where we would see Claire Randall come completely clean when it comes to Jonathan Randall being alive. She knows that he is the subject of Jamie’s nightmares, and while that may worry her, she has to be even more concerned at the prospect of him learning the truth about him from someone else. She knows he could be visiting soon with the Duke of Sandringhim, and also that Alex Randall is in France along with him.

So why continue to keep the secret then? As Caitriona Balfe explains to Yahoo! TV, for the time being fear is continuing to motivate her in this regard:

“When she finds out about Black Jack, her biggest fear is that this will send Jamie into a spiral again or make him do something rash. Maybe he’ll try and go back to Scotland and kill Black Jack … So there’s a lot of fear in her decision to not tell him. She feels a lot of guilt about it. It continues this sort of alienation that the two have from each other.”

The complexity of this situation is ultimately rather simple to define, at least in that it makes perfect sense why Claire would want to keep this secret from her husband; yet, the consequences of keeping it could be so much more severe than just telling the truth, and this is something that we imagine she is going to have to reconcile at some point before we reach the end of the season.
