‘Outlander’ season 2, episode 2 reaction: Caitriona Balfe on Black Jack Randall reveal
Of course, we begin this “Outlander” article with a warning that there are some spoilers ahead from Saturday’s new episode entitled “Not in Scotland” anymore. If you want to keep reading, be aware of that.
Still with us? Then let’s talk the aftermath of one of the most shocking reveals of the season: Black Jack Randall is still alive! This announcement came courtesy of his brother Alex, who is serving the Duke of Sandringham, and completely blindsided Claire Fraser as a result. Much of the way in which she and Jamie have gone about their business so far this season has come as a direct result of the knowledge that they at least thought that they had about this man no longer being a thorn in their side. Realizing that he is still in fact around could change things in a pretty seismic manner, even if he is in another country.
In speaking about this twist even further to The Hollywood Reporter, star Caitriona Balfe said the following about some of her character’s fears:
“There’s a great fear that this is going to be something that breaks Jamie. She felt that they were finally getting to a place where they could put that to rest. Even though she still sees Jamie struggling with the torment of all that happened last season, she felt like they were perhaps on the road to recovery. Now with the knowledge that he’s actually not dead and his brother is now in Paris, she’s so scared that it’s going to break Jamie.”
The next step of course is Claire telling Jamie about Jack being still among the living, which we’d like to presume she will do in time no matter how difficult it may be. (We are not a book reader, so we have no knowledge of what happens.) Our feeling, though, is that if she would be willing to disclose her status as a time traveler, she should be able to handle this reveal.
