MTV’s ‘Awkward’ season 5, episode 17 review: Fired on the Fourth of July
One of the strange things is how few shows out there have any sort of proper 4th of July episode. Why is that? One of the biggest reasons could just be because shows tend to air from September until May, and with that in mind we don’t really get many opportunities to see a timely episode about the holiday.
Luckily, “Awkward” season 5 doesn’t really care so much about timeliness, and we got an Independence Day story on Tuesday night’s new episode. With that being said, it was a far-from-happy affair for Jake, who was fired from his country club job as a result of Jenna, Matty, and Tamara’s partying. Jenna brought Luke to the golf course, and Matty had his super-goofy girlfriend Sully. What this party did was pair up characters in new settings, and there was fun in seeing Sully and Jenna on the same page … even though the former did try to kiss her at first before Jenna pulled away.
As for Luke, he got blackout drunk when doing what he thought was a drinking game, and on the way to that tried to fight Matty. There were a few “revelations” when it comes to Jenna and Matty’s relationship, but they weren’t romantic ones. They are simply getting on a better page as friends, and realizing that they’ve made some mistakes in the past. Will that change in the future? It’s possible, but for now they just gotta get on the same page.
Strangely, we didn’t find Sadie and Sergio that entertaining this time around. Instead, this “Awkward” episode worked best when Jenna and company tried to act more adult, but still letting their childish side out in ways that proved that they still have some growing up to do. Also, somebody better help Jake! Grade: B-.
