‘The Vampire Diaries’ not necessarily ending with season 8 despite Ian Somerhalder comments

tvd -Over the course of the weekend, much of the internet was set ablaze over the thought of “The Vampire Diaries” ending after its upcoming eighth season. Ian Somerhalder made some comments suggesting that the show is going to be riding off into the sunset, but does that mean it’s happening for sure? Not necessarily.

Speaking to TVLine, executive producer Julie Plec had the following to say when it comes to the show’s future plans, with the caveat being that she technically made these comments before Ian spoke out (but after Kat Graham confirmed she was exiting at the end of season 8):

“I’m going to be dead honest with you: I was so happy to get Season 8 that even the idea of Season 9 is so far away — I haven’t even started thinking about it … I know Kat made her announcement; I wish her everything she wants, and she can stay as long as she wants.”

We really have a hard time imagining that The CW or Plec have for sure made an official plan for the long-term future of “The Vampire Diaries,” but now that we’ve said that, we do have to take into consideration the fact that typically when we start to hear whispers about a show ending its run, it typically means that it’s happening. Can you really do it without most of the majority of the cast? We’re in a similar situation right now with “Pretty Little Lairs” over on Freeform, so we’ll just have to wait and see what happens.
