‘The Magicians’ season 2: Premiere date speculation for Syfy adaptation

Tonight, Syfy is saying farewell to one of their most-ambitious new series of the year in “The Magicians.” The good news here is that this is far from the end of the road for the series.

Earlier this year, the network officially renewed the adaptation of the Lev Grossman series for a second season, which is nice news given that this a network where we’ve worried quite a bit over the years over the future of their shows. It’s good to just watch something without having that cancellation fear in the back of our head.

Ratings-wise, this is also looking more and more like a smart move for Syfy. While we’re not going to say that they have hit the ratings out of the park in season 1, it has remained remarkably consistent from the third episode or so onward. The viewers that they’ve acquired, they’ve kept. That is a tremendous sign that most of these people will be around in the future. The fear with any series, especially a genre show with a small episode order, is that many viewers bail during a lengthy hiatus and don’t come back.

As for when “The Magicians” will actually return, it’s probably a long time before a premiere date is confirmed. When Syfy officially announced the renewal all they made clear is that it will launch once more in 2017, and that it will run for 13 episodes. We do think that this January-April run suits it nicely, since it gets it off the air before the competitive May sweeps, so we’ll just have to see if the show sticks to that.
