‘Outlander’ season 2 premiere coming early via Starz standalone app

Outlander -

Like Showtime and HBO before it, Starz is getting into the standalone streaming business. Not only that, but they’ve got a gift for everyone out there who chooses to subscribe: The season 2 premiere of their buzzworthy series “Outlander.”

The network has now launched their service, which will run at $8.99 a month and give you access to the network’s full library of programming along with sister networks Starz Encore and Movieplex. This service will be an app that Apple and some Android devices will be able to download, and it will be available for those out there who already have a Starz subscription if they authenticate it.

As for “Outlander,” subscribers will have a chance to check out the season 2 premiere starting on Thursday, two days before the show starring Caitriona Balfe and Sam Heughan premieres. (For those wondering, we’re going to publish our premiere review Saturday night after the episode airs; we’re going to keep to a standard time for these in order to prevent confusion as best we can.)

In a statement, network CEO Chris Albrecht had the following to say about the new service:

“Our programing will now be more widely available to the 20 million broadband only homes of cord nevers, cord cutters and cord shavers … including Millennials and other underserved consumers who need other viable subscription service options.”

This may be a little bit of an aside, but who knew that “cord nevers” was actually a phrase that is being used by some people? If this just Albrecht trying to sound like he’s “hip to the trends” or something?
