‘The People v. OJ Simpson: American Crime Story’ episode 9 preview: Chaos from the Mark Fuhrman tapes

People -

We’re starting to get near the conclusion of “The People v. OJ Simpson: American Crime Story,” and as a result of that, we certainly expect to see more and more of the political and social impact of this trial upon the city of Los Angeles.

For a little more evidence of what this will look like, you really don’t have to look any further than the new promo below. In this video, you get a pretty clear picture of just what the trial is doing to the city, and what the uncovering of the Mark Fuhrman tapes could mean to OJ Simpson’s case in particular.

For those who are a little bit unfamiliar with the case (there are so people out there), let’s set this up. Earlier this season Fuhrman testified that he does not have a history of using racial slurs or other offensive language towards African-Americans. However, these tapes reveal that he does, and this means that he perjured himself previously while on the stand.

Is this a big deal? It certainly is for so many reasons. The knowledge that Fuhrman lied on the stand is a big deal, and more so than that, this sort of language shows that there could be a level of disdain that the LAPD has for African-American citizens, which in turn could suggest that racism played a role in Simpson’s arrest. The job of the defense is to set him up as a sympathetic figure, and when you remember that the defense does win this case, this could be one of the big reasons why they came out on top.
