‘The Night Manager’ episode 6 (finale) review: Did Jonathan Pine defeat Richard Roper?

Night Manager -

Through the past five episodes, BBC’s “The Night Manager” gave us a story that was full of intrigue, fine performances by Tom Hiddleston and Hugh Laurie, and quite possibly some of the most beautiful settings we could ever hope to see on a British television show. In some ways, you could view many of the episodes as an elongated commercial for viewers to come visit Mallorca at some point in the future.

In the end, this story ended really in the way that it should, given that there was never any indication that the show was going to live on past its current run of episodes. Richard Roper was arrested and taken down by authorities, though not necessarily the same sort of authorities that you may have expected. Pine and Burr’s mission proved to be a successful one, even in spite of the conflict and turmoil that it faced throughout. Roper at one point was still confident he could escape, at least until he realized just who had captured him.

As for Jed, she is getting an opportunity to finally head home, though we imagine that her relationship with Pine may not be completely over just yet. As for him, the ending left with him seemingly satisfied, and there was of course irony in him being asked if he needed anything in the closing minutes. In full, it shows his full evolution as a character, and where he could go from here if the series decides to continue telling further mysteries.

While it may have been a somewhat-straightforward conclusion to this tale, what was not to like about it? “The Night Manager” gave you drama, it gave you beauty, and above all else it gave you cinema-quality storytelling on the small screen. Grade: A-.
