March Makeovers: Should ‘Quantico’ pick a time?

Parrish -From the moment it first premiered, “Quantico” was a series that had our attention. There always does need to be shows on TV that present a great mystery, and when this show is rolling, there’s nothing else like it. Priyanka Chopra is outstanding, the twists are big, and the show keeps us guessing.

Yet, there is a part of the show that can be improved upon, and it’s something that we really want to focus on now in the latest chapter of our March Makeovers series.

The problem – There’s never a defined time period for this show. What we mean by that is we’re never quite sure if we were watching a show with frequent flashbacks, or one with frequent flash-forwards. There’s no clear line, so we never have a defined frame a reference. With the way the two stories jump around, it’s also not ever that clear which time period we are in much of the time, which causes this to be one of the more confusing network shows out there. We feel ultimately like these are distractions to a show that is doing so many other things right. (Oh, and there’s one other issue: Stop making people hook up all the time. You can do better than that.)

How to fix it – Either make this “Harry Potter” for FBI agents, or something similar to “Homeland” with defined backstories. While we don’t always love the flashbacks on “Arrow” this is a good reference point for how much of them we really need of them an episode for them to work. It’s somewhere around 20-30% at most. That makes it clear what the primary universe is, and also who are the important players. We’d prefer now the show stay in the future world, mostly because we feel at this point like we “get” the Quantico one and there’s really not too much that can be said there that we have not already heard.
