‘Of Kings and Prophets’ canceled by ABC after just two episodes

Of Kings -

It now appears as though there will not be many more kings or prophets coming on ABC in the future. After all, the network has now formally announced that they are ending the run of “Of Kings and Prophets” after just two runs on the air.

When you looked at the ratings, this was a question of when more so than if. The numbers for this show were pretty terrible, and there is no real way to get around that. This past episode drew just a woeful 0.5 rating in the 18-49 demographic, and the plan now is to replace the show with “Beyond the Tank,” effective immediately.

What this does show more than anything else is a continued inability on the part of the network to find a suitable show for this timeslot. They had at least a solid one in “Body of Proof” that they decided to cancel, and we do wonder if they regret that decision now. Some other recent flops in this timeslot include “Lucky 7” and also “Wicked City.”

In all honesty, we’re not sure why former ABC exec Paul Lee ever thought this was a good idea for a show in the first place. It seemed like he wanted to take the “Game of Thrones” formula and place it more within the Biblical realm, but this show was not religious enough to appeal to the evangelical crowd, and it was not racy enough to appeal to the hardcore HBO viewer. It was almost “Game of Thrones” lite in a different setting, and it was delayed once already because of recastings and other tweaks made after the pilot.

New ABC exec Channing Dungey, with this move, proved that she is ready to move into a new era.
