‘Galavant’ star Joshua Sasse books CW pilot; season 3 odds dim significantly

Let’s start this article with a little bit of reality: The odds were not exactly good for “Galavant” to get a third season. As much as we love the show and its silly sing-song brand of comedy, the ratings were pretty terrible through most of season 2. In some ways, it was a stroke of luck that it even got a renewal the first time around.

While the following bit of news is not a complete nail in the coffin for the show, it does make it clear that the odds of renewal are extremely slim. Per Deadline, Joshua Sasse, who played the title role in the ABC comedy, has booked a part on the CW pilot “No Tomorrow” as a man who thinks the apocalypse is coming, and is therefore desperate to live his life to the fullest. There are comedic tinges to the show, and it is an opportunity for Sasse to show both what he used on “Galavant” and then something more.

What may surprise some is that this pilot is actually in first position to “Galavant,” meaning that if the “No Tomorrow” is ordered to series, he will go with it regardless of what happens with his former show. He would appear at the start of season 3 before the role was to phase out.

Now that we’ve said that … we think this is a potential sign that “Galavant” doesn’t have much of a future on ABC. It’s a shame, but we certainly cannot fault Sasse for making sure that he has a shot for some great work for the upcoming TV season. Maybe the series will develop a cult-like following over time and it can be revived down the road.
