‘NCIS’ episode 300 preview: Show boss on casting Taye Diggs

NCIS -

There is a new episode of “NCIS” airing on CBS Tuesday night, but it is already clear that this is not your standard episode of the show. “Focus” is a story of a man with PTSS in St. Aaron Davis who turns to music, specially the MusiCoprs program that helps rehabilitate soldiers, in order to find some sort of healing.  It’s a chance to see Gibbs and eventually the rest of the team solve a case, while also getting a window into their own souls and remember precisely why it is to do what they do.

We’ve already praised this story conceptually, mostly because there seems to be an effort here to transcend just these individual characters and focus on the show’s overall message, which is a team of people who are trying to help those who so need the support.

In talking about getting Taye Diggs specifically to play this part of Sgt. Davis, showrunner Gary Glasberg had the following message to pass along in a chat with TVLine:

“We knew that we needed somebody with some real musical chops, and when Taye read the script, he was eager to come do this with us … And we were super lucky to get him, because he does some really, really beautiful scenes with [Mark] Harmon.”

We anticipate a few nods to the series’ history over the course of the hour, and when the dust settles, the biggest thing that we feel is that you’re going to have a chance to see everyone start to really look at precisely what they do and why they do it. We’re starting to feel like this episode may not offer too much insight into DiNozzo’s impending departure, but there may be more chances to tell that story later.
