‘The Walking Dead’ season 6, episode 13 review: Carol and Maggie’s escape plan

Carol -

If there is one thing that we can say for certain about Sunday night’s new episode of “The Walking Dead,” it is this: The show had no problem making us wait for an inordinate amount of time. The first 45 minutes or so were paced extremely slowly as we saw Maggie and Carol struggle to escape the likes of Saviors and Polly, their “we are all Negan” sort of leader at least among this group.

This episode certainly had one of the more violent and grisly kills — let’s just say that Polly did not make it through the end of the hour. She put up quite the fight in the midst of her escape, and there was a pretty terrible realization that Carol had to make as a result of all of this: She has killed a lot of people. We know that she can be a badass in many ways, and the sort of person we want to root for; yet, she’s human. Part of what makes this show so great is the humanity of it all, and that these characters are human. It’s one thing for Carol to take out walkers, but tonight she had to alongside Maggie go through a wide array of living, breathing people to survive.

In the end, how do we appreciate this episode? Do we appreciate this episode? In the pantheon of season 6, we’re not entirely sure we will be remembering this for long. It was extremely compelling for fifteen minutes, but rather dull and uneventful before that. All we can say moving forward is that the hunt for Negan continues, and this violence is all leaving its mark on Carol.

The one thing we can say with confidence is this: Negan now has more motivation than ever before to go after these people. We just wish that we were getting to the good stuff a little faster rather than sitting through what we’d say was an episode full of Syndrome-esque monologuing with an awesome ending to try to make up for it. Episode Grade: B-.
