March Makeovers: Does ‘Game of Thrones’ need any sort of recovery?

LogoCan you really even “makeover” a show like “Game of Thrones“? We have talked about this subject with a variety of different shows as of late in our March Makeovers series, but it is admittedly a little bit tricky with this one. It’s a show that is doing a lot right, and its recent Emmy win in Outstanding Drama Series is proof of that.

Yet, at the same time we feel like even the best shows out there still have a little bit of room for growth, and that is what we’re focusing on here in the latest chapter of our March Makeovers series.

What’s going wrong? – As we’ve said, the issues here are for the most part minimal compared to some of the other ones that we’ve been discussing in this series. The stories on “Game of Thrones” as of late have been super-compelling in King’s Landing and Beyond the Wall. We’re also rooting for Sansa more than ever.

However, it’s time for something big to happen with Dany. As great as Emilia Clarke may be, her story has been stagnant now for years, and there really has not bee that much development in her ultimate endgame. You can even argue that now, we’ve taken a step back. Tyrion’s story, while entertaining in its own way, has also quieted since arriving in Meereen. We also went too long with Bran Stark, and the whole plotline in Dorne was about as close to a disaster as the show has witnessed to date.

How to fix it – For one, avoid Dorne at all costs if you can in season 6. Meanwhile, start to wrap up Dany with the Dothraki sooner rather than later. Get her back in a position of power, and from here also figure out a way to ensure that Sansa can find more victories and less horrific situations. This is a show that, above all else, needs to start building towards a collective endgame. We’re now more than halfway into the run, and yet we still don’t know what the endgame will look like or the purpose of many characters.
