‘Quantico,’ ‘Fresh Off the Boat’ renewed by ABC for seasons 2, 3
Apparently there is one thing that new ABC programming head Channing Dungey wants to change not long into the job: The timing in which certain shows are renewed.
We only posted minutes ago news that “Once Upon a Time” had been renewed for a sixth season, and now we’re hearing that two other shows have been given a green light for more: “Quantico” and “Fresh Off the Boat.”
When it comes to “Quantico,” this move comes before any of the second half of the season airs, and this is clearly a move designed with confidence as to where the Priyanka Chopra-led series is going. The ratings were not necessarily stellar by the time the winter finale rolled around, but the network has taken a big gamble with this show already, airing repeats often and doing what they can to build buzz around it as the next big thing.
Meanwhile, “Fresh Off the Boat” has been a little more under-the-radar, but has proved itself to be a funny addition to the cast that also expands the network’s portfolio when it comes to diversity. Both in and “Quantico” accomplish that in different ways, and we have a few jumping-off points now as the network starts to make some other key decisions when it comes to the 2016-17 TV season. At the moment, our assumption is that the entire #TGIT lineup is going to be renewed, and the same thing can probably be said for the reality staples a la “The Bachelor” and “Dancing with the Stars.” Ultimately, the tougher choices may come with shows like “Castle” and “Nashville,” which are long-running but have struggled as of late in the ratings.
