‘American Idol 15’ video: Watch Thomas Stringfellow, La’Porsha Renae, Joshua Sasser perform!

American Idol -

Tonight, we’re going to see the beginnings of the top 24 performance round on “American Idol,” and while you prepare for that, we’ve got a few videos that you don’t have to wait until the show to see! These are three of the contestants who will be vying for a place in the top 14 tonight.

For those wondering, the judges will make their decisions on the Thursday show.

Joshua Sasser, “All By Myself” – We don’t doubt Joshua’s vocal ability or his audacity to take on a huge song like this. The guy’s clearly got talent and can perform in front of an audience. Our question is whether or not there’s anything about this song choice that is exciting in 2016. We thought this was an unexciting choice when we first heard people on “American Idol” do it years ago.

Who knows, though? Maybe Joshua gives it new life by the time we get around to the end of the song.

La’Porsha Renae, “Proud Mary” – Do we think that there are some things that La’Porsha needs to work on? Sure, since her arrangements so far have not been particularly different from the original recordings. If that’s the only criticism we have, though, you are doing a really good job. She manages to make this old Tina Turner hit into something new. Yes, her vocals are out-of-this-world, but what we love more than anything else is how she used everything from her arms to even her eyes to sell the song.

Thomas Stringfellow, “Creep” – Easily the most inventive arrangement of the three videos we’re profiling here at the site. He’s got a look and a style that many traditional “American Idol” voters out there are going to like, and he’s also got a lot of confidence for a guy who’s still a teenager. The one thing that we’d fix are those affectations at the end of some of his phrases. At times they sound almost like yips, and they distract from the nicer qualities of his voice.
